water closet, (WC). Flushing lavatory that
works by siphon action. The first widely used
WC was produced in the 1770s by Alexander
Cummings in London. The present type dates
from Davis Bostel's invention of 1889, which
featured a ballcock valve system to refill
the flushing cistern.
